'Our Place' Project

Fiona Crudden from Fermanagh & Omagh District Council worked with P6 & 7 children this morning and introduced the 'Our Place' project to them. They looked at where they lived in the context of their country, province, county, parish & townland. They looked into the history and range of language associated with their locality. The children focused mainly on the townlands connected to both the school and the pupils themselves.

The children now have to complete some research on their own townland where they live and so will be speaking to many of their older relatives and perhaps neighbours regarding this.  Using the information gathered, they will in turn create a piece of work based on their own personal interpretation of their townland. This can take the form of poetry, prose or artwork. Again it is hoped to have an artist or facilitator in the classroom to help with this. 

All are agreed that it is time well spent for our young people to become familiar with our townlands and to learn something about them.
