Hive Hackers
Today our children in classes P4-7 began their 7 Week Coding Programme created by PwC for Primary Schools.
With Computational Thinking & Coding being our area of focus within ICT this school year, we are delighted to have been selected to participate in PwC's programme which enables us to Code in a fun, structured and supportive environment.
At St. Oliver Plunkett PS, we strongly believe coding is best learnt at an early stage. Learning to code is similar to learning a second language, and the earlier that we are exposed to fundamental topics like sequencing, loops, and conditionals, the more deeply we absorb these concepts.
Today was an 'unplugged' session, where our teachers and PwC staff introduced the children to the concept of programming using pencil and paper (the iPads will be out next week!!). They were introduced to algorithms and programs and had the opportunity to create and instruct each other with algorithms to shade squares. The children also created paper airplanes by working out the correct algorithmic sequence. They even had the opportunity to test how well their planes flew, with those who followed the algorithm most closely noting that theirs flew best.
All the children are thoroughly looking forward to PwC's return next week.
