Hawthorn Days & Wildflower Ways
Having recently read in class the wonderful novel ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’ by Marita Conlon-McKenna, the children of P6&7 along with Mr Conroy, Mrs McCrystall and Mrs Monaghan, travelled to the Ulster American Folk Park this morning to take part in activities associated with the novel.
The children had the opportunity to visit the various houses of the park and see, feel, smell and indeed taste what life was really like in Ireland during the famine times of the late 1840’s. They also had the opportunity to see first hand what life was like on the emigrant ships for the many Irish families who made the long and difficult journeys to the New World of America or Canada.
Blessed with sunshine throughout the day, the children really enjoyed this opportunity to bring their topic work on ‘The Great Irish Famine’ to life.
