Moths - Did you know??

Mrs Hawkes from the Nursery brought in a large variety of moths today having captured them in her garden for research purposes.  She told the P6 & 7 classes that there were over 1,000 different types of moths in the UK (most of us had thought moths were just brown moths!).  Moths are a beautiful and important part of the UK’s wildlife.  They are highly sensitive indicators of the health of the environment and play crucial roles in the food chain as well as being pollinators of plants.

Mrs Hawkes helped the children to understand how to identify male moths from the female of the species as well as to identify all the different types.  The children from P6 & 7 were very grateful to Mrs Hawkes for sharing her interest and knowledge of moths with them.  She was heading home this evening to release them into the wild again as she can only study them for 24 hours.
